Psychedelic Breathwork for Higher States of Consciousness

Psychedelic breathwork is a guided breathing practice designed to induce altered states of consciousness without the use of substances. Drawing from ancient practices and modern therapeutic techniques, it employs specific patterns of rapid, deep breathing combined with intention focus, evocative music and sound healing instruments. This activates the nervous system and can lead to profound emotional, spiritual, and physical experiences.

The practice is known for promoting self-exploration, releasing suppressed emotions, and accessing heightened states of awareness. It is often used for personal growth, healing, and connecting with deeper aspects of the self.

What can I expect during a session?

The practice of Conscious Connected Breathing involves lying down comfortably, eyes closed, and breathing in a circular motion to upbeat rhythmic music/ music chosen specifically to breathe to. A common misconception is that breathwork is relaxing or a form of calming meditation, which couldn't be further from the truth. There is work to be done with your breath; You inhale and exhale without a pause, through your mouth and into your belly or diaphragm.

A short introduction and demonstration of the technique will be given to you. The session then lasts approximately 40 minutes with 30 minutes of guided conscious breathing and 10 mins of rest breathing afterwards. If you wish to journal or to discuss your experience once the breathing ends, this is an option for you. You are in a safe space and everything discussed is confidential.

Some of the most common experiences that clients may encounter during the session are;

- Increased energy and vitality due to higher levels of oxygenation

- Altered states of consciousness including feelings of euphoria, transcendence, or a sense of oneness with the universe

- Strong emotional release such as crying, laughing, or other emotional expressions

- Tingling sensations, warmth, coolness or hand cramping called (tetany) .

- Increased self-awareness and introspection

- Relaxation and stress reduction

- Enhanced or heightened intuition and creativity during or after the session.

- The release of stuck energy through clearing blockages in the body's energy centers (chakras) and energy pathways (meridians)

- Emotional and spiritual insights such as revelations about oneself and the nature of existence.

- Increased focus and mindfulness

What is breathwork?

Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB), or otherwise referred to as Circular Breathing, is a technique which alters and controls your breathing to reap various mental, emotional and physical benefits. This is the breathing technique I use here at Breathwork Zen but there are other similar breathwork techniques such as Holotropic and Rebirthing Breathwork.

The primary function of CCB is to use conscious and connected breathing patterns to form an altered state of consciousness. This is done by breathing rhythmically, continuously and deeply with no gaps between in and exhalation. The Circular motion helps to keep breathing flowing, connected and uninterrupted.

Is Breathwork safe?

The most important factor to consider when practising breathwork is that you are always in control. If you'd like to stop at any point during the session, you can.

Jon Paul Crimi, my breathwork teacher, has been guiding people through breathwork for over a decade and has yet to see any of his clients experience unpleasantries.

If at any time you feel the breathing is too intense or if you have any worries or concerns, its important to express this to your teacher who will be able to make adjustments to better support your needs.

Is Breathwork for me?

As is the case for most types of therapy, breathwork isn't appropriate for everyone. If you have any health concerns, its important to let your teacher know and to also seek guidance from your healthcare provider if necessary.

Breathwork may result in an intense physical and emotional release so is not advised for individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease, including angina or heart attack, high blood pressure, glaucoma, retinal detachment, osteoporosis or any significant recent physical injuries or surgeries.

Breathwork is also not advised for individuals with severe mental illness, such as psychosis, paranoia or bipolar disorder, any form of seizure disorder / epilepsy, or for those using major medications. It is also unsuitable for anyone with a personal or family history of aneurysms.

Pregnant women are advised against practicing breathwork without first consulting and getting approval from their healthcare provider. Those with asthma should ensure their inhaler is with them during the session and should consult with their healthcare provider and breathwork teacher before their first session

It's important that you prepare to face difficult feelings and have a solid support network to help you process these feelings after the session is over.  Some individuals may experience discomfort or anxiety while participating in breathwork, especially if they have a fear of losing control or losing consciousness.

My role as your teacher is to guide and support you through any difficult emotions or feelings, and to offer the best support I can to ensure you feel safe and relaxed.
